Course Description

Program Management is the process, tools and techniques for managing a collection of projects to achieve specific organization objectives in alignment with the vision. MSP® (Managing Successful Programs) represents proven program management good practice in the successful delivery of transformational change through the application of program management.

MSP defines program management as "the action of carrying out the coordinated organization, direction and implementation of a dossier of projects and transformational activities to achieve outcomes and realize benefits of strategic importance to the business".
Today's organizations exist in a climate of constant and increasing change. Organizations that have learned how to transform themselves through effective leadership and strategic control are more likely to survive and prosper. Program management is increasingly being recognized as key to enabling organizations to manage that transformation. MSP has been used and adopted within many organizations both within the public and private sectors. MSP is very flexible and designed to be adapted to meet the needs of local circumstances.

The MSP framework comprises three major elements:

The principles of program management have been distilled into seven features which form the foundation of the framework. They are:

Governance Themes
Nine Governance Themes represent topics which need to be addressed throughout the life of the program. It is the control framework which enables the program to deliver and ensures there is visibility for stakeholders.

Transformational Flow
The term Transformational Flow is used to describe a series of six processes which guide the program management team through the program.

Types of Programs
MSP recognizes three broad categories of program:

  1. Vision Led Programs take a top down approach
  2. Emergent Programs evolve from current workload
  3. Compliance Programs

Qualification

There are no hard requirements for the MSP foundation, it is recommended to have the project management training, for example PRINCE2 training background.

MSP Foundation Exam Format

  • Multiple-choice
  • 40 minutes duration
  • 50 questions
  • 30 correct answers or more are required to pass
  • Closed-book

MSP Practitioner Exam Format

  • 8 questions, each worth 10 marks each. Total of 80 marks
  • Objective Test Examination' format - a style of complex multiple-choice examination.
  • 2 and a half hours duration
  • Delegates may use their official MSP manual: 'Managing Successful Programs' only
  • Candidates require a minimum of 40 marks (50%) to pass
